Russian missile and drone attack kills a
In the early hours, large explosions
rocked Kev as sirens rang out.
A huge Russian bombardment of drones and
missiles on the Ukrainian capital saw
multiple targets attacked. Several
residential buildings were struck as
Ukrainians rushed to shelters once
again.
Daybreak revealed several apartment
blocks had been turned to rubble with
emergency crews and volunteers picking
through to search for survivors.
[Applause]
>> It was a flash and then everything
started falling down. I don't understand
how we're still alive. We had furniture
against the walls and all the cupboards
fell on us, but we survived.
>> I was sleeping in the corridor with the
dog. The first blast wave blew the
windows off. Second blast wave blew all
the doors off. Then we ran out into the
street.
>> Everyone is suffering now. It's coming
to any area. As we can see, no
negotiations have yielded anything yet.
Unfortunately, people are suffering.
>> At least 16 have been killed, including
four children, the youngest just 2 years
old. Dozens more have been injured.
At least 40 people have been injured in
Kev. There's been a missile attack.
There have been two missiles near this
building. If you take into account the
number of damaged cars nearby, we can
say that it was cluster ammunition. In a
statement, President Zalinski says this
is proof to the world that Putin isn't
interested in a ceasefire and real
diplomacy. Posting, Russia chooses
ballistics instead of the negotiating
table. It chooses to continue killing
instead of ending the war. And this
means that Russia still does not fear
the consequences. We expect a response
from everyone in the world who has
called for peace, but now more often
stays silent rather than taking
principal positions. And it is
definitely time for new tough sanctions
against Russia for everything it is
doing. This CCTV footage shows the EU's
officers and those of the British
Council being struck. Both were severely
damaged, but no staff were hurt. Whether
deliberate or simply indiscriminate, the
attack drew swift condemnation from
European leaders.
>> I'm outraged by the attack on KEF, also
hitting our EU offices. This was the
deadliest drone and missile attack on
the capital since July. It was an attack
also on our delegation. And this is
another grim reminder of what is at
stake. The British Council says their
building will be closed to visitors for
some time, but they will continue their
educational and cultural work. The UK
foreign office has summoned the Russian
ambassador in London to explain.
Inspecting the damage, Mayor of K Vitali
Klitschko.
>> Putin is responsible for this war which
he started and does not want to stop. He
doesn't just want Daetsk, Luhansk or
Crimeir. He wants the whole country. He
is destroying cities and killing people.
Our strength lies in our unity with our
European partners and the United States.
And together we can repel this invasion.
This means modern weapons, tough
sanctions, and pressure from the
international community to end this
horror.
Moscow claims it intercepted 102
Ukrainian drones overnight. Nonetheless,
they successfully managed to strike two
oil refineries, one in the Crash Nodar
region and the other in Samara. Both are
still ablaze.
Ukrainians are once again left to
recover the fallen and clear their
destroyed homes. More evidence for the
prosecution of Putin's war crimes.
In a small act of defiance, these key
residents stepped over the broken glass
of their salon windows to go about their
daily lives running their business to
provide their customers with some trace
of normality.
On Sunday, people here celebrated 34
years of independence after the fall of
the USSR. Their determination to keep
calm and carry on in the face of renewed
Russian imperialism seems unfettered
three and a half years into this war.
We're now joined by Ukrainian MP and
leader of the Hollos party, Kira Rudik,
who's currently in Kev seeing the damage
for herself. Kira, thank you for
speaking to us after a dramatic night.
Can you tell us about your own
experience and how you're feeling today?
>> Hello, Vinian. Thank you so much for
having me. Indeed, it was a devastating
night and uh especially it was so
devastating because it happened right
after the celebrations of uh in
Ukraine's independence where I have
heard from so many people in Kiev that
they finally have hope. They have hoped
that the war will end and they have
hoped that that the pressure from
President Trump will finally reach Putin
and Russia. Right now, I wonder how many
of those people have survived through
the night. And today, we are trying to
figure out who who is alive and not. And
uh our rescue services are still uh
actively working. As of right now, we
know of 16 people killed, including
three children. And we know that at
least 48 people are being wounded. and
the rescue works are still undergoing
and uh this is just terrifying.
>> The biggest attack for several months.
How are Ukrainians reacting this
morning?
>> It was not unexpected. However, we
always had hopes that it wouldn't happen
again that u the reputation of American
president will have some influence on
Russia that they wouldn't dare uh to
make this public slap. But it's not only
a public insult of American president.
So today the office of representation of
European Union was attacked. British
council building was attacked. So um
it's uh it's just Putin's insult on
everyone on all our European allies and
we just hope that people would not
continue hoping to see something in
Putin's eyes but actually will start
acting and
Steve Witkov and and the rest they say
that you can strike a deal with Russia.
Well, while you are striking this deal,
Russia is actually striking us and uh uh
we have agreed to a ceasefire and we
have asked for a ceasefire right away.
For some reason, after talking to Putin,
President Trump changed his mind and he
said that you can set up a deal.
However, how many people will be killed
on the way to this deal and if this deal
would even happen? As of right now, we
see no real steps from Russia that would
uh that would confirm that they really
want to end the war. AB absolutely this
attack this night did not confirm it. It
was showing the world that Russia will
continue killing us for as long as it
takes and they wouldn't stop unless they
are stopped. And no American president,
no European leaders uh are ready to uh
to stop them right now. So we are
calling for really drastic actions for
the sanctions to be imposed and for
additional air defense systems being
sent over to Ukraine because Vinnie this
night it was more than 600 drones
attacking K attacking Ukraine like can
you imagine this was the really barrage
on drones and missiles and our capacity
in air defense systems is really
limited. There was a flurry of
diplomatic activity a thought ago, but
President Zilinski has said this is
proof Putin isn't interested in
negotiations to end this war. What
should he be doing now?
>> President Zalinski needs to be
persuading President Trump to go ahead
and get tired of Putin's insults and uh
uh of public humiliations. So we hope
that President Trump will either
pressure Putin into a ceasefire or he
will go on the bad side and start
executing on all the threats that he has
made on the sanctions on arming Ukraine
on pressuring Russia's allies who are
purchasing uh their gas and oil because
this is the only way uh President Trump
has been pressuring Ukraine into
committing to a ceasefire and into
committing to a rare minerals deal and
we have done everything. We have agreed
to everything that we were asked. Right
now, it's a time to put pressure on
Russia because if you look at it, uh the
United States have put zero pressure on
Russia since President Trump was in
office.
>> Do you think President Trump might
realize because he is swayed by
television pictures? Uh looking at these
scenes, will he clock that Russia was
simply stalling uh and that this was all
theater perhaps on their side?
>> We hope that he will. And for the sake
of the families of people who were
killed today, I just hope that he will
because it's so unfair that people don't
know if they're going to wake up in the
morning when they're going to their beds
at night. It is so unfair that the
illusion that Putin has fed to President
Trump right now has an actual cost here
on the ground and this costed people's
lives, children's lives.
>> Your president has called for more
international sanctions. What would you
like to see countries doing now?
>> The first and foremost what needs to be
done is confiscation of Russian assets
that are being frozen. This is how to
hit Russia hard. Unfortunately, we don't
see a political will to do it right
away. But we know that we need to move
forward in the matter. Right now, Russia
has stored about 300 billion maybe more
in European countries. And these monies,
they belong to Europe. they belong to
Ukraine to to ramp up defense, not using
money of the European taxpayers, but
actually using Russian money. For
Russia, it will be a sign that Europe
means business.
>> And you've touched on this already, but
what do you make of Russia hitting the
EU and British Council's offices? Was
this deliberate?
>> It was absolutely deliberate. And I can
tell you, Vinnie, why? Because just a
couple of days ago, Russia has targeted
a factory in the western Ukraine about
800 kilometers from the front line in a
very safe area. And this factory was one
of the largest American investments in
Ukraine and it couldn't have been an
incident because uh it was so far away
from everything and the factory was
doing coffee makers. So it was before
right now they are attacking the
European and British organizations in
Ukraine. It was a targeted attack to
show that the Russia doesn't care about
anything that Russia feels strong enough
and in the capacity to continue
attacking to continue fighting and that
European uh countries and uh European
and American leadership cannot protect
the interest here on the ground in
Ukraine. And this is such a public
insult and slap in the face that it
needs to be answered.
>> Kira Rodic, Ukrainian MP and leader of
the Hollist party. Thank you very much
and stay safe.
>> Thank you and glory to Ukraine.
